You can’t make this stuff up

I’m making my way through the 77.2342 gazillion pages of reading I have for school. It’s really not that bad. That is, until I came across this gem. It’s too good, and I just had to share. If you’re not really the techie-type, I think you’ll still find the wording quite hilarious. You just can’t make this stuff up.

“To users of the Internet, TELENET is rather like riding on a swan; that is, the users gets a very smooth ride, but the TELENET swan is paddling like crazy beneath the surface, making links, exchanging protocol parameters, and transferring information across the multiple boundaries.” – Reference and Information Services: An Introduction, chapter 6, page 163

Oh, but wait, there’s more!

“One can think of the stateless Web server as a Pez dispenser, sending the little candies down a chute as quickly as it can flip its top.” – Reference and Information Services: An Introduction, chapter 6, page 168

  1. I totally demand a print of this painting you speak of on teh twittah. This is delightful imagery. I am not sure what it is supposed to be describing, exactly; but it is a delightful description of SOMETHING!

  2. This is me riding on a swan: It feels very feathery. My feet are wet. I’m a little scared that my weight is going to sink the swan (unless, of course, we are riding on swans that were given super-growth hormones….which makes sense if one day in the future they might start to attack people. swans would be much scarier if they were super huge).

I love when people use random examples for things.

    • And this totally just makes me think of Shades of Grey. I’m sure the swans are huge. I’ve commissioned artwork for this from my sister. Because obviously. :)

      • I want to see said artwork when you receive it!

I find myself thinking of Shades of Grey quite often, actually. The second book needs to come soon!
